
Cape Maclear, also known as Chembe, is a fishing village on the northern tip of Nankumba Peninsula on Lake Malawi. The Village is located in the Lake Malawi National Park, the first freshwater national park in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located at the southern end of the great expanse of Lake Malawi, Lake Malawi National Park encompasses the sandy beaches and granite islands of Malawi’s Cape Maclear peninsula, the southern end of Lake Malawi. Lying within the Western Rift Valley, Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world and has exceptional natural beauty with the rugged landscapes around it contrasting with remarkably clear waters of the lake. The park's clear waters are populated by hundreds of species of colorful cichlid fish, most of which are native to the lake. The Park is home to eco-lodges and traditional fishing villages (Chembe Fishing Village). Facilities for snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking are available.
Lake Malawi National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984 to protect the unique marine life of thousands of tropical fish including over 850 species of cichlids. The stunning underwater scenery of boulders and canyons gives an impressive backdrop to the abundant marine life. With warm clear water, Lake Malawi provides some of the world’s best freshwater diving.

Domwe Island lodge
Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi, with a circumference of 11km and a highest point 400m above lake level. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow Illala Gap which, due to fluctuations in lake level over the times, has been dry on several occasions.
The island is part of the Lake Malawi National Park. Unlike all other Lake Malawi Islands, Domwe is well populated with mammals.

Cape Maclear is an all-year-round destination. Visiting Lake Malawi, particularly for viewing fish underwater in the southern section, is best between May and October. The weather gets progressively warmer going from moderate to hot by November.
Hot and Dry seasons runs from September to the middle of November, getting warmer as the season progresses. This is the most popular time around the lake as the water is at its most serene and clarity is high.
