Zomba Plateau

Zomba City, the beautiful and historic former capital of Malawi and the natural beauty of the surrounding Zomba District, are both literary and figuratively in the shadow of the Zomba Plateau, arguably one of Malawi’s many natural wonders. The Zomba plateau forms part of the Shire Highlands that run from the southern end of Lake Chilwa. Zomba plateau is Malawi’s oldest forest reserve, with waterfalls and walking trails amid the forests. Zomba plateau has rare variety of plants, offering breath-taking views, and it is a haven of seclusion and peace. The plateau rises up 1800m above sea level and it offers a good spot for hiking, walking, horse riding and bird watching.

Nestled on top of the Zomba Plateau, right on the edge of the plateau, in a tranquil forest reserve renowned for its temperature climate and natural splendour is Sunbird Ku Chawe, which rises up to nearly 2200m (7000ft) above sea level, with the highest peaks on the rim forming a saucer bowl.

The dry season which runs from May to October, is the ideal time to enjoy the lush landscapes of the Zomba Plateau. This time of the year provides pleasant temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and excellent visibility for photographing the landscape of the plateau.
