Mulanje Mountain
The Mulanje district lies in the southern part of Malawi. The district covers an area of 2056 sq. km. and is well known for its tea-growing estates. It is also home to Mount Mulanje, which is one of the highest peaks in southern Africa, standing at 3002 meters above sea level, a tourist attraction.
Mount Mulanje, locally known as an “Island In The Sky,” is a hiker’s paradise-enchanting and challenging in equal measure. The rocky peaks, high grasslands, deep gorges, and powerful rivers transport the visitors into another world.
Mount Mulanje is the highest peak in south-central Africa-Sapitwa peak reaches 3002m. It is a huge isolated massif with 20 peaks of more than 2500m rising out of a disjointed plateau. A great impression of impregnability is given by its precipitous flanks, which rise abruptly from the surrounding flat plains below. The west face of Chambe offers the longest rock climb in the whole of Africa-,700 m of sheer cliff.
Located about 80 km from Blantyre, Mount Mulanje is the best-known and most popular mountain area in Malawi. The peaks are steep and rocky; hiking on Mulanje Mountain is an exceptional experience, whether one approaches from the south or north side of the mountain. Trails are clearly marked, and visitors can choose between a gentle trek and a serious climb. Wildlife is limited on Mount Mulanje, but velvet monkeys, rock hyraxes, leaf-nosed bats, and klipspringers are common. There are 10 huts on the mountain that provide shelter for all hikers. The best time to visit Mount Mulanje is between April and November, though excursions during the other months of the year are also possible.

Hiking during the rainy season (December to April) is avoided when trails can become slippery and visibility is poor.
May to September - This is the ideal time for hiking, with pleasantly cool daytime temperatures and the potential for night frost, especially from May to August.
October and November - These months are the hottest and haziest, although the rains move in from December to March, making the weather cooler and clearer.
December to April - This is the rainy season, and while hiking is possible with extra precautions, trails can become slippery and visibility may be reduced.
